2 Lankans try to cheat finance company by pledging fake gold
The Sriperumbudur police have arrested two Sri Lankan nationals who tried to cheat a finance company by pledging fake gold to avail a loan. Police said Vijaya Srikanth alias Kandabala (42) from Jaffna and Padmanabhan from Colombo, who were staying at Palavakkam, had gone to a Muthoot Finance Company branch on Gandhi Road with five bangles on Monday and claimed that they were made of gold.
But when the staff at the counter found out that two of the bangles were fake, with only a gold covering, the duo fled the scene. Based on the CCTV footage from the branch, the police tracked them to Thiruvanmayur on Wednesday morning. Police said the duo confessed that they had conned 12 branches of the company by pledging fake gold.
The police are investigating whether they came to India on genuine passports or they had taken an illegal boat and landed here. They were living with their families at Palavakkam after shifting from Trichy a few years back.
