RBI says ₹2,000 notes can still be exchanged at 19 offices

The Reserve Bank of India has reiterated that ₹2,000 currency notes remain exchangeable through its 19 designated issue offices across the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the central bank also reminded the public that these notes can be sent through India Post to any RBI issue office, where the amount will be credited directly to the sender’s bank account.

The RBI had announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes from circulation in May 2023. While banks accepted deposits and exchanges until October 7, 2023, the RBI’s issue offices have continued providing the facility since then.

From October 9, 2023, these offices have also been accepting ₹2,000 notes for direct deposit into bank accounts.

According to the RBI, the value of ₹2,000 notes in circulation has fallen dramatically—from ₹3.56 lakh crore when the withdrawal was announced to ₹5,451 crore as of April 30, 2026. This means that nearly 98.5% of all such notes have already been returned to the banking system.
