BJP names candidates for Rajya Sabha elections in five states
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its list of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, fielding leaders from five states ahead of polling scheduled later this month.
The party has nominated national general secretary Tarun Chugh from Madhya Pradesh, while former Rajasthan BJP president Satish Poonia and party leader Alka Gurjar have been chosen from Rajasthan.
In Odisha, the BJP has named Debashish Samantaray, a former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader who joined the saffron party earlier this year. His nomination is being viewed as part of the BJP’s efforts to strengthen its political footprint in the state by accommodating leaders with experience across party lines.
The BJP has also announced candidates for vacancies arising in other states where elections to the Upper House are due. The selections were finalised after consultations within the party’s central leadership.
Tarun Chugh, a prominent organisational leader from Punjab, currently serves as a BJP national general secretary and has handled key responsibilities in several states. His nomination from Madhya Pradesh underlines the party’s preference for experienced organisation leaders in parliamentary roles.
Satish Poonia’s candidature from Rajasthan marks a significant political assignment for the former state unit chief. The BJP is expected to comfortably secure the seats it is contesting in the state, given its strength in the Assembly.
The Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled for June 18 to fill vacancies caused by the retirement of sitting members from multiple states. With the numbers largely favouring major parties in several Assemblies, many contests are expected to be decided without significant electoral uncertainty.
The latest list reflects the BJP’s attempt to balance organisational experience, regional representation and political outreach as it prepares for the biennial elections to the Upper House.
