New Rajya Sabha Members Take Oath
On April 6, 2026, nineteen new members of the Rajya Sabha took their oath in a ceremony presided over by Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan. Among them were Sharad Pawar, leader of the NCP-SCP faction, and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were also present during the event in the Rajya Sabha chamber. Floor leaders from various political parties attended the swearing-in ceremony.
The new members included five from Maharashtra, six from Tamil Nadu, five from West Bengal, and three from Odisha. Maya Chintaman Ivnate of the BJP was the first to take the oath, followed by Sharad Pawar, who used a wheelchair due to health reasons. Other notable members from Maharashtra were Ramrao Sakharam Wadkute (BJP), Jyoti Nagnath Waghmare (SS), and Athawale (RPI-A).
From Odisha, Manmohan Samal (BJP), Sanrupt Mishra (BJD), and Dilip Kumar Ray (Independent) took their oaths. Representing Tamil Nadu were Constandine Ravindran (DMK), Christopher Manickam (Congress), L K Sudhish (DMDK), M Thambidurai (AIADMK), Tiruchi Siva (DMK), and Ambumani Ramadoss (PMK).
Babul Supriya Baral, Biswajit Sinha, Menaka Guruswamy, Rajeev Kumar, and Rukmini Mallik from West Bengal also swore in. Most members took the oath in their respective regional languages.
Chairman Radhakrishnan congratulated all the new members on completing the formalities to join the Upper House of Parliament.
