Supreme Court declines urgent hearing on plea over Delhi protest police action
The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to urgently hear a petition challenging the police action against students during a protest march organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Delhi.
The matter was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The petitioner’s lawyer sought an early listing, claiming students had been subjected to police excesses and offered video evidence in support of the allegations
The bench, however, refused to consider the request at the mentioning stage, stating that it was not inclined to review video material while deciding on urgent listing.
The petition relates to clashes that took place during a march towards Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. Thousands of students and protesters had gathered demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination-related irregularities. The demonstration later turned violent, with police using force, including lathi charges and tear gas, after protesters attempted to move towards Parliament.
