Election in 5 states: Rs 651 crore in cash and gift items seized

As assembly elections approach in multiple states, the Election Commission has stepped up its enforcement efforts with a large scale special drive.

Authorities have seized assets worth over Rs 651 crore, highlighting the scale of attempts to influence voters.

According to official data, the seizures include a significant quantity of drugs, liquor, and cash along with large volumes of free gifts. The commission noted that the value of drugs and inducements has been unusually high compared to previous elections.

To ensure strict monitoring, thousands of flying squads have been deployed across states and union territories. These teams are tasked with responding swiftly to complaints and taking immediate action against any violations of election rules.

In addition, static surveillance teams have been set up to conduct surprise inspections and keep a close watch on suspicious movements. Officials said that complaints are being addressed within a short time frame to maintain transparency and fairness.

West Bengal reported the highest value of seized items, followed by Tamil Nadu. The commission observed that the nature of election malpractice appears to be shifting, with a growing reliance on drugs and freebies instead of direct cash distribution.

The Election Commission has made it clear that any attempt to lure voters through illegal means will be dealt with strictly. With increased vigilance and coordinated efforts, authorities aim to ensure free and fair elections across all regions.
