Tamil Nadu Reviews LPG Cylinder Shortage Crisis
Minister for Food and Civil Supplies R. Sakkarapani and Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam held a meeting on Wednesday at the Secretariat in Chennai to discuss the shortage of LPG gas cylinders in the state.
During the meeting, officials from different petroleum companies informed the government that the supply of cooking gas cylinders could last for only about 25 days. They also said that the stock of commercial cylinders—used in restaurants, hotels, and other businesses—was running very low, according to an official statement.
Representatives from various restaurant associations requested the government to ensure a steady supply of gas cylinders for restaurants and educational institutions. They emphasized the need for priority distribution to keep kitchens running smoothly.
The associations also suggested that the government support businesses in using electricity instead of cooking gas wherever possible, to reduce dependence on limited LPG supplies.
The Tamil Nadu government is expected to take steps to manage the shortage, including monitoring supply, increasing distribution, and encouraging alternate cooking methods to prevent disruption in restaurants, hostels, and schools.
