When historic markers in Chennai are demolished without explanation
The destruction or poor care of heritage sites can cause many problems. One big issue is that important items like plaques and historical markers are often lost or ignored during renovation work.
Recently, at Nageswara Rao Park, the plaques at the entrance went missing during renovation. These plaques had the names of people who donated money for the park. At first, the local councillor said the plaques were kept safely. But later, it was revealed that they had been thrown into a dump. Even though officials said they were being “taken care of,” the plaques have now gone missing again.
The situation becomes worse when old buildings are changed or removed for new projects. At Kilpauk Medical College, the name of Dr. M. R. Gurusamy Mudaliar was removed from one of the building blocks during renovation. His family members are confused and upset about this decision, but authorities have not given any proper explanation.
Dr. Gurusamy Mudaliar is still remembered in other ways. A road in Kilpauk is named after him, there is a statue near the General Hospital, and he also started a school. However, the building at the medical college was likely the most meaningful tribute to him. Removing his name from it has caused disappointment among his family and people who respect his work.
